High security paper shredders shred documents into minuscule fragments.
Conventional shred sizes are 1/32" X 7/32" (.8mm X 5mm).
Occasionally this detritus is referred to as super micro-cut shreds.
This is also the topmost fragment permissible under the new DOD standard.
Predominantly these machines only shred paper; capacities vary from 3 and 16 simultaneous pages.
DoD/NSA shredders will typically not shred media such as CDs.
There are also shredders procurable for media such as CDs, but these are even more specialized contrivances.
High security shredders ordinarily accept a exiguous number of small paper clips and staples, but continual cavalier use of this capability curtails service life.
If the paper should jam, the motor can operate in reverse to extract wedged material.
Prior to procuring a shredder of this class, particularize that it meets DOD and NSA specifications. The DOD specifications were revised in 2002, so purchase one abides to the new criterion. A variety of manufacturers have built shredders to these stringent specifications. We have even seen a 320 High Security PAP shredder from Fellowes that meets DOD shredder requirements. The fellows DOD 480 PAP Shredder is widely distributed at stores like Amazon. This shredder befits lower usage scenarios where economical price predominates. If you intend to use your shredder habitually we recommend premium shredders such as MBM's Destroyit high-security shredders. Shredding to a high security specification requires a capable motor, considerable electric amperage, and superb components. Under designed machines may begin to fail after relatively brief use. Regardless of the shredder purchased, seriously consider extra warrantee protection. Shredders have many moving parts and frequently break. This is one of the few exemplars where it makes sense to buy these types of warrantee products. We've used shredders of this class and frankly they are a pleasure to operate. They expeditiously dispatch large amounts of paper into small bits. The reversal feature of the motor works remarkably well when we get ahead of ourselves and over load the feeder. A typical shredder can feed paper at rates of 32 feet/minute. That's about the speed of film running in a movie. Quite quick really. These high end shredders have other wonderful features like a detector for full bags and casters. They are not cheap. They may cost between $7,000 for a free standing one that shreds 16 sheets of paper at a time, to $1,900 for a table top model. Nevertheless, if you need to shred documents related to law cases, health care, DOD secret or top secret files, this is the way to go. The government may still impose rules regarding the disposal of even these tiny shreds, so check on proper disposal of the refuse. Also be aware that quality shredders can weigh a lot. We've seen 350 lb shredders in this class. Antithetically, we've also seen table top shredders that are somewhat more portable at 30 lbs. Given the great loads these shredders bear expect higher quality ones to weigh more. Some companies that sell these shredders include: |
